Ajmer Sharif – The revered shrine of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.), which draws millions of devotees from around the world every year, is currently facing a deep administrative and moral crisis. Following a series of serious allegations against Mohammad Adil, Assistant Nazim of the Dargah Committee Ajmer, the Muslim community of Ajmer and the Khuddam-e-Khwaja fraternity have jointly demanded his immediate suspension, dismissal from his post, registration of criminal cases, and an independent judicial investigation.
Constitutional Status of the Dargah Committee
It is important to note that the Dargah Committee Ajmer operates directly under the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India (New Delhi) and is governed by the Parliamentary legislation titled “The Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955.” According to this Act, the Dargah Committee holds a constitutional responsibility to serve the pilgrims (Zaireens), maintain transparency, uphold ethical conduct, and preserve the sanctity of the religious institution.
Key Allegations and Incidents
1. Diggi Bazaar Fire Tragedy (1st May 2025):
A fire broke out at Hotel Naz, leading to the deaths of five pilgrims who had come to visit Dargah Sharif and injuring several others. Despite collecting lakhs in donations in the name of serving pilgrims, the Dargah Committee failed to provide any assistance to the victims. Multiple attempts to contact Assistant Nazim went unanswered.
2. Sexual Harassment of Female Teachers:
Multiple female teachers from Khwaja Model School have submitted written complaints alleging sexual harassment by Mohammad Adil.
3. Abetment of Suicide:
A staff member of the Dargah Committee reportedly died by suicide, with accusations of mental harassment. The role of Mohammad Adil is under investigation.
4. Past Criminal Investigations and FIRs:
• Two FIRs filed at Civil Lines Police Station, Ajmer:
1. Section 354 (Assault or criminal force to outrage modesty of a woman)
2. Section 306 (Abetment of suicide)
• Previous disciplinary notices issued by former Nazim and Committee President regarding financial irregularities.
5. Major Corruption Scandals:
• Financial mismanagement in the construction of Gharib Nawaz University.
• Non-transparent spending in the Kalam Library at Khwaja Model School.
• Camera procurement scam during the 813th Urs, bypassing the mandatory Government e-Marketplace (GEM) portal.
• Toilet construction scam at Sol Thamba.
• Suspected misuse of funds from the PRASAD scheme under the Ministry of Tourism.
6. Neglect of Basic Facilities at Dargah:
Recent rainfall damaged tents and umbrellas within the shrine complex. Despite volunteers offering to help, the administration refused permission and made no effort to repair or replace the damaged infrastructure.
Demands of the Community
1. Immediate suspension and dismissal of Mohammad Adil from his official position.
2. A full and independent judicial inquiry into his entire tenure.
3. Registration of criminal cases and stringent legal action on all reported matters.
4. Institutional transparency, accountability, and ethical governance within the Dargah Committee.
5. Formation of a special investigation team by the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
Warning of Peaceful Protest
If action is not taken on the above demands within 7 days, the Muslim community of Ajmer along with the Khuddam-e-Khwaja will be compelled to initiate peaceful and democratic protests, memorandums, and public demonstrations.
Final Statement
The Dargah Sharif is not merely a religious site, but a spiritual heritage representing humanity, compassion, and integrity. The continued presence of individuals repeatedly accused of serious misconduct tarnishes the sanctity of this sacred place.
